Internships for Entomology Majors

ENTMLGY 4191 Internship Experiences in Entomology 1-2 credits
The Entomology major requires hands-on experience through student internships customizable by student interestTen or more weeks of an individualized experiential learning opportunity designed to link theoretical classroom knowledge with practical field application or research experience in an ongoing research environment.  While some students use research experience with entomology faculty as their internship, many students secure hands-on experiences outside the university through government agencies, non-profits, and private business and consulting firms. 

Entomology Student research Assistant Jobs

Many Entomology faculty employ undergraduate students to develop lab skills and a passion for research.
Lab experience may occur as part of the major-required internship (unpaid, see ENTMLGY 4191 and ENTMLGY 4998/9H, above) or as student research assistants (paid) to work in labs or research fields. Contact the faculty member directly to discuss internship or employment opportunities.

Ohio state Research Internship Program (ORIP) ORIP Student with Graduate Student Mentor in the Luis Canas Lab

Who: Gaduating high school seniors and current underclassmen over the age of 18 by May 1 of the year of the program.

What: Annual summer research internship opportunity at the Ohio State CFAES Wooster Campus. Participants are not required to attend Ohio State. ORIP is tailored specifically to enhance student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Through laboratory and field research, interns receive a hands-on experience in data collection and analysis, project design, and scientific communication of results.

When: ORIP Applications accepted starting in January. Program runs from May 13 to July 19, 2024.

Where: ORIP takes place on the CFAES Wooster Campus; 1680 Madison Ave, Wooster, OH 44691

Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) SROP Intern with the Peter Piermarini Lab

Who: Students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program who are US citizens, permanent residents, and have a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, full criteria below*. 

What: The Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) is a collaboration across the Big Ten Academic AllianceBig Ten Academic Alliance’s 2024 Summer Research Opportunities Program helps prepare undergraduates for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors and enrichment activities. The program provides students with a $5,000 stipend, travel, housing, meal plan, and an enriching 9-week research experience with a faculty mentor while providing faculty with opportunities to recruit talented and diverse students into their graduate programs.

When: Application deadline: Feb 10, 2024. Students can apply through the BTAA SROP application page. The program runs for 9 weeks, May 28 to July 26, 2024.

Where: SROP takes place on both the CFAES Wooster and Columbus Campuses.

*SROP Student eligibility requirements

  • SROP is open to all undergraduate students, including minority students, first-generation college students and students from low-income families, regardless of race or ethnicity.  
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (4.0 scale)
  • Be a citizen or a permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Be enrolled in a degree-granting program at a college or university in the United States, Puerto Rico, or other U.S. territory
  • Have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate education by the time of the summer experience
  • Have at least one semester of undergraduate education remaining after completing the summer research experience
