Insect ID and Pest Questions

The OSU C. Wayne Ellett Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic (CWEPPDC) specializes in the identification of plant diseases, plant health problems, insects and insect related problems.

As a public institution, we can not to promote a single company. A reputable company can be found by referring to the Ohio Pest Management Association membership directory. OPMA has a code of conduct for members and is generally comprised of responsible pest management specialists.

Your local OSU Extension office has Agriculture and Natural Resource Educators able to answer farm, garden, home, and business questions.

The Identification Technology Program (ITP), part of the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Plant Protection and Quarantine division, develops digital and molecular technologies to make pest identification easier and more efficient. In addition to fact sheets, identification keys, screening aids, and mobile apps, the toolchest also includes a platform that enables both professionals and amateurs to search, share, and develop identification resources and tools.

ID tools to screen for or identify plant pests and diseases are authored by taxonomic experts and are either taxon-based or commodity-based. They may also include image galleries, glossaries, references, and other customized identification support and background information.
