Postdoc Laurel Haavik seeking survey participants

Laurel Haavik, a postdoc in the Herms Lab, studies growth and physiology of ash trees that may or may not be resistant to emerald ash borer.

After reflecting on her academic career and goals, she now believes that the tenure system is outdated and in need of serious revision. She wonders if others feel the same way.

Specifically, have others thought of leaving science? And if so, why? Has the disparity in numbers of women and men graduates vs. those occupying professional positions actually changed in recent decades? Most importantly, what allows people to cope with such a rigorous career?
