Buckeye Honey is produced, harvested and bottled by hardworking students (and bees!) at the Rothenbuhler Honey Bee Research Lab, located within the CFAES Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory.
The honey is typically harvested in early summer to capture the abundant nectar flow from spring blossoms in the Columbus area. We perform microscopic palynology to identify the residual pollen present in the honey our bees make and use the distinctive shape of the pollen to identify the floral source. The honey we make is from black locust (Rabinia pseudoacacia), apple (Malus spp.), honeysuckles (Lonicera spp.) and the other flowers in our area, including the Ohio buckeye, Aesculus glabra!
