Discovery and virtual visits

We’d love to help you plan a Bug Zoo experience that fits your group. Our living collection of insects and other arthropods can support classroom learning, community programs and hands-on outreach for learners of all ages.

We offer three program tracks, listed below. Contact us to talk through availability, group needs and the best option for your visit.

Bug Zoo Discovery (on-site)

Duration: 45-60 minutes
Group Size: Maximum 25 students
Price: $50

During this program, your group will be divided into two smaller groups. One group will enjoy guided free time in the bug zoo, allowing them to explore the fascinating exhibits. The other group will have a unique opportunity to touch or hold live insects from the zoo, guided by our knowledgeable instructors. Grades 3-12.

Bug Zoo Encounter (off-site)Jeni Filbrun teaches students how bugs eat

Duration: up to 4 hours
Group size: Maximum 25 students/section
Price: $150 first hour, $50 each additional hour

Experience the wonders of the UTBZ without leaving your location. Our instructors will bring a collection of live insects to your site, offering an engaging and educational experience. Students will learn about insect adaptations and have the opportunity to interact with several of our ambassador insects. Grades 3-12.

For large group events like family nights, festivals, or Right-to-Read Week, the UTBZ can bring our instructors, a selection of live insects, and static displays to your event. Visitors will have the chance to handle live insects and explore at their own pace. This program can be combined with a short presentation for a comprehensive bug-themed experience.

Virtual Visit - Ask an Entomologist

Duration: 30 minutes
Price: $25

Bring the UTBZ into your classroom virtually! Our knowledgeable instructor will join your class via Zoom for a virtual zoo visit. We'll showcase some of our live insects, discuss the fascinating work of entomologists, and answer any questions your students may have about insects or entomology careers. Grades 3-12.

Insect Investigations

Duration: 60 minutes
Group Size: Maximum 25 students
Price: $5 per student (Minimum $75)

Engage students in hands-on experiences, as they work directly with live insects and design and conduct scientific experiments. These immersive programs take place at the UTBZ and provide students with an opportunity to explore the zoo.

Macroinvertebrate Study

Students will visit a local stream or pond to dip net for aquatic organims. They will learn to identify specimens and discover how these organisms serve as indicators of healther systems. May-October, Grades 5-12.

Arthropod Adaptations

Students explore insect groups and their unique adaptations, then go on an insect scavenger hunt. Students will return to lab and use digital scopes to take a closer look at their finds. May-October, Grades 3-12.

Isopod Investigations & Cockroach Conundrums

Students will discuss the scientific method, then design simple choice experiments using the Bug Zoo’s isopod or cockroach collection. All Year, Grades 3-12.

Pollinator Palooza

Through a simulated pollination activity, students explore the adaptations of different types of bees and the threats that pollinators face. Students then spend time surveying insects in the pollinator garden. May-October, Grades 5-12.
