The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) provides guidance for companion animal tick protection. 

• Remember to read, understand, and follow the label. The label is the law.
  
  • Labelled time of effectiveness for tick prevention products (acaricides kill ticks) can be different for different tick species. The product label will have that guidance. 
  • Some acaricides are species-toxic and using an acaricide in a manner that is not in accordance with its label can cause severe medical problems. For example, there are acaricides that are labelled for dogs only and will cause neurologic problems in cats if used incorrectly.
• Work with your vet to pick the most effective product that not only fits with the lifestyle of your pet(s) but fits in your budget.  
• Tick preventative products should be used year-round. Check the AVMA website for recommendations.
