Bed bugs are hitchhikers

They do not live on people like lice. They hide nearby, come out to feed and return to cracks, seams and crevices.

You can lower your risk by checking items before they enter your home, reducing hiding places and acting quickly if you see signs of bed bugs.

At home

  • Inspect secondhand furniture, mattresses, bedding and clothing before bringing them inside.
  • Reduce clutter near beds and resting areas.
  • Vacuum mattresses, carpets, rugs, furniture and baseboards often.
  • Seal cracks, gaps around pipes, loose wallpaper and spaces along baseboards.
  • Use mattress and box spring encasements when bed bugs are a concern.

When traveling

  • Check hotel rooms before unpacking, especially mattresses, headboards and upholstered furniture.
  • Keep luggage off the floor and away from beds.
  • After travel, inspect suitcases and wash and dry clothing on high heat when possible.

For pets

  • Bed bugs prefer people, but they may bite pets if people are not available.
  • Check pet bedding for dark spots, shed skins or eggs.
  • Wash bedding in hot water and dry on high heat.
  • If you think your pet has bites, contact your veterinarian.
