Ben Stinner Endowment for Healthy Agroecosystems and Sustainable Communities
Ben Stinner had a clear and compelling vision: agroecosystems that preserve high environmental quality, sustain the health of and social connections among people, and do so by efficient recycling of natural resources and social capital rather than through the infusion of external inputs. More than anyone before, Ben provided leadership toward this vision by connecting people, helping shape their ideas particularly with respect to the land, and turning them into action. His love of the land, deep sense of community with people everywhere, and deep understanding of the relationship between people and the land guided his life and work. His leadership transcended all institutional boundaries. The purpose of the Ben Stinner Endowment is to sustain his vision and work, beyond all institutional boundaries, toward sustainable and healthy agroecosystems and communities.
An immediate need to sustain and build on Ben’s efforts is programmatic, over and above the programmatic efforts resulting from existing endowments, to preserve the scope, extent and impact of Ben’s very successful work with the Agroecosystems Management Program. A second priority for the endowment will be facilities for collaborative activity between OSU faculty and their partners. An appropriate space could be a restored barn, incorporating meeting and office spaces as well as an ecologically efficient design with respect to energy use.
